Welcome to Prepare for Independence

You are getting ready to enter an exciting new phase of family life.  The child who you have nurtured for nearly 18 years is getting ready to head out into the world.  Just when you were finally getting used to adolescence, you are faced with the new demands of  parenting a young adult and your child is entering an exciting time of major transition. Moving from high school to the next step can be daunting for everyone. As a parent, you want to provide the appropriate guidance to help with this change, but it's not always easy to do.

We've created this FREE short on-line course,
PREPARE FOR INDEPENDENCE, to foster open communications around difficult or overlooked topics. Our aim is to give you information on the choices, challenges, and risks you'll face.

The course is organized into three learning sessions:

Module 1: Making Cents of your Money
Module 2: Entertaining Risk vs. Excitement
Module 3: Just for the Health of It

Each session includes:
  • Access to a strictly monitored on-line discussion with other parents and professionals
  • Interactive activities to help initiate conversations between parents and their young person
  • and links to on-line resources and materials

We anticipate that each module will take you no more than an hour. You will then have a week to work with your teenager on the worksheets or activities you think are appropriate in the module.  At this pace, the entire course will last 3 weeks.

PLEASE NOTE:  We would like to give a very special thank you to Empire State College for hosting this course as a community service.  Very special thanks to Empire's Kent Stanton for the time, commitment and expertise he put into making this course a reality.   Kent is dedicated to helping young people in both his personal and professional life, and without his efforts, this course would not be available!
